Judges’ Recital

An evening of piping by Patrick Molard from Maël-Carhaix, Brittany, and Gold Medallist, Andrew Hayes from Ottawa, Ontario.

The recital was a benefit for the Nicol-Brown Amateur Invitational Competition, and a welcoming reception for the competitors. The competitors were introduced, and received their tune selections from the judges.

2013 Results

Ten of the finest Amateur pipers from across North America were invited to play in an elite invitational contest with three events: 6/8 Marches, Piobaireachd and MSR. The contest is dedicated annually to the memory of Robert U. Brown and Robert B. Nicol.

Judges for the 2013 Nicol-Brown Contest:
Patrick Molard from Maël-Carhaix, Brittany: Winner of the MacAllan Trophy in Lorient in 1980, 1981, and 1982, and the Champion of Brittany three times for bombarde and biniou-playing. Patrick is a lifelong student and teacher of Piobaireachd, beginning his studies with Jakez Pincet, Bob Brown and Bob Nicol.
Andrew Hayes from Ottawa, Ontario: Gold Medallist at the Northern Meeting in 2010, among a long list of solo piping prizes. He was a competitor at the Nicol-Brown contest in 1990 and 1991, and returns this year for the first time as a judge. Andrew is Pipe Major of the Grade 2 Ottawa Police Service Pipe Band.
June Hanley from Warminster, Pennsylvania: EUSPBA Music Board Chair and member of the Ulster Scottish Pipe Band. June won the Nicol-Brown Chalice in 1986.

Nicol-Brown competitors were given the privilege of receiving instruction from judges Patrick Molard and June Hanley, and pipers at all levels were encouraged to observe the Master Class. Topics included musical expression, technique, and improving performances toward the professional level.
